George Pelling

George (94), of Laguna Woods passed away December 2, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia; sons, Rodney and Trevor; stepson, Michael Matthews and his wife, Julie. He was preceded in death by stepsons, Terence and Stephen Matthews. Born October 25, 1914 in Southern Rhodesia, South Africa. George was a R.A.F flight officer in W.W. II . His plane was shot down in Africa and he was imprisoned in Stalag Luft III prison located 100 miles outside Berlin. In prison he participated in tunnel building for what became known as the Great Escape and many years later he played a role in the movie titled “The Great Escape”.

He was proud to become a U.S. citizen in 1962. George loved racing sports cars and sailing but his real passion was acting. He appeared in over 31 movies and television shows. He also appeared in plays at the Laguna Playhouse. George Pelling had a saying of “Press on Regardless” which he put to practice in surviving those terrible years as a P.O.W. Well, George Pelling your family and friends will “Press on Regardless” until we meet again.
